Today marks the first day of the 2008 Great Backyard Bird Count. This is my first year joining in and since it might be your first year too, I thought I’d share the links to the main information you need to participate. It’s pretty simple, you watch an area for 15 minutes. You can go to other areas and observe too, it doesn’t have to only be your yard. Here’s what you will need to write down and how to go about counting these feathered friends. You can find the regional checklist for your area to make it easier on yourself.
Here are some of my buddies to give you tips:

Some of us will try to hide from you. Look closely and you might see us.
If I sit really still, all stretched out like this, you might think I am part of the tree trunk.
I’m way up in the top of a tree, good luck seeing me. What, the red spot? Oh that’s just a flower. Yeah, tress bloom in the winter.
Yay! Free food! I’ll ignore you as long as you feed me.
Hey, why are you looking at me? Maybe if I turn around. . .
. . .and poop on you, you’ll leave me alone!
Do you have some cranberries?
If I close my eyes and sit like this, will you go away?
I’ll wait until it’s very cold, windy and snowing so maybe you won’t notice me clinging to this branch.
Wow this stuff is really hard when it’s this cold. I don’t care, count me.
If I flap my arms, can I be counted? I just want to eat some seed. Cheep!
We’re traveling in a pack and you can't count that high, or that quick. Ha-ha!
I’m glad all those juncos left, more seed for me!
Is there any left for me?
More seed please. FEED ME!
hey, i love the squirrel picture. i had to go take the 'finch food' down
yesterday because the squirrel kept using the snow as 'leverage' and
grabbing the bag, getting up on the feeder and kicking it out all over the
ground. i went out and barked at him several times but he kept coming back
(yes, i barked at the squirrel, shut up!) anyway, when i went out to take
the bags down i could hear him squawking and squabbling at me from 15 yards
away. i just laughed at him and told him that's what the ear corn on our
patio was for. which he obligingly came and ate once the 'access' to the
sunflower seeds was taken away.
Wow, that last little bird should be named Oliver. "Please, sir, is there
any more?" Great photos, as always.
You never ever fail to produce the most amazing photos. I do hope you have
success selling them.
Love that squirrel comment. The birdies are soo adorable.
You have birds in your backyard?! All I see out my window is a snowstorm.
I'm jealous. I haven't seen a bird in months, not counting your great
photos.
Great pics! Thanks for the reminder! Time to grab the kiddo and head
outside:o)
Fantastic photo´s again and great post!
I want to be able to take photos like you when I grow up.
It is so simple and yet so rare for us just to go out and watch the birds
and squirrels. I like that you're doing this :-)
Great photos, Lisa. Your site is always interesting to look at.
What awesome photos. Perhaps when my kids are moved out, I will have more
time for the birds. I need to get more seed, I'll do that Tuesday. Until
then, they have some left, some bread and some spilt seed.
You're photos are just incredible. I'm sure you're sick of hearing that by
now. Please, no more squirrels. Arrrggghhhh.
Awww! They are so cute! Especially little the one in the snow. Btw, thanks
for dropping by at my blog :-) *waving back* .
LOL, you are so funny!! Lovely pictures! Have fun counting!
Beautiful pictures. I hope you enjoyed counting. :)
Beautiful pictures - and the captions are hilarious. I used to bird watch
when I lived in OKC but never participated in a count. I'll have to do
that sometime!
Look at the cute birds you have! I was going to do the bird count, but I
have been naughty and haven't looked for birds as much as I should. Love
your photos though!
Too much going on for me to participate -- I had initially planned on it.
