It really was that blue.
After spending the night in Denver (and after getting distracted by the cute little church and fun walking trail), we made it to the Rocky Mountain National Park. Yippee! I know you are rejoicing too. We were not sure if the road we wanted to travel would be open or not; according to the website it’s closed until May 31st because of snow and we were there on May 25th.
We got lucky and road was open, the day before it had been shut down and it just opened about 30 minutes before we got there.
As we went up, up, up, we ran into snow, and lots of it. Hope that mound doesn’t fall over on the car.
If I remember correctly, this was the highest point we were at, close to 14,000 feet. Dennis was affected by the altitude the most. He had a continual headache for most of our Colorado days. But considering we live at about 800 feet, I think we can easily get altitude sickness at 2,000’.
Just thought the rocks looked cool sticking out of the snow.
Curvy, narrow roads winding up.
Imagine the view if that pile of snow wasn’t there.
Oh yeah, that’s pretty. Even if the snow is way taller than the vehicles.
Uh-oh, I think he better watch out, that snow pile looks like it’s leaning.
And then we went back down. We didn’t stay up there very log, seems even sitting in the car it was difficult to breathe. Forget trying to hike.
What do I see there?
But these two Moose (mooses? Meeses? Meese?) were rather boring so we went on down the road and came upon some more.
Don’t you just want to bury your face in his ears?!
I’m not sure if he’d like it though.
Maybe the baby one would let you.
Isn’t he the cutest?! He is a miniature copy of his parents.
Guess his ear itched. I bet he heard us talking about how soft they looked.
A little further down the mountain.
And a little further. I would never have thought there were pelicans in the mountains.
That first shot really grabbed me! You know I just cannot fathom how people
can look at a city and see beauty! At first all I saw was the mountains and
the blue and then the buildings popped out at me and I thought Ewww! You
are intruding on this gorgeous scene!
What awesome shots of awesome land! Those roads look a bit scary to me
though :-) Looks like you're having a great time of it...
Spectacular pictures. Seeing all the snow scenes is quite amazing.
WOW! I can't believe how high that snow was! We will be traveling to
Denver in Sept. I hope it is a bit less snow :0p
These blow me away. The wildlife shots are gorgeous. So much to wonder
about. Thanks.
I would have been FREAKING out driving on those roads!!! WOW!! Great
shots of the snow. I can't wait to go roadtripping!!! Your blog always
makes me feel like that! We vacationed in Cloudcroft, NM for a week at
9,000 feet. The first night, I really and truly felt kind of a mix between
drunk and high! Breathing was difficult for most of the time, but I had my
prednisone and a couple of inhalers with me. If it got real bad, I was
instructed to go to lower altitude!!! So...yeah...I know how your husband
was feeling. But, it was Way Cool to vacation in a chalet at the top of
the mountain!! Thanks for bringing back such great memories for me.
Hugs!!
I always felt the snow was a nice guard rail vs sliding down the side of
the mountain.
Another favorite location of mine in Colorado, Estes Park. Probably some
of the most beautiful country I've seen in a long time, I visit there as
often as I can! And the wildlife in RMNP is amazing...although I've never
seen Moose! Just elk, elk, and more elk! So glad you had a good time in
the Centennial State.
