My dad ran into the house yelling for my mom to get in the basement now.
My parents live in southwest Missouri and this time the tornado hit about a half mile from their house. That's just a little too close for comfort. And, from what I have heard on the weather channel that tornado has been classified as an f4, about a mile wide. Scary stuff.
Mom and dad got lucky and the only damage they sustained was one down tree and a few branches. Some of their very close neaighbors weren't so lucky.
This guy was trying to get his car a little protection from the golf ball sized hail. Guess that didn't work, but he's ok.
These people lost 47 trees in a storm 5 years ago and now the remainder are gone. But their house is still standing, which is actually saying a lot considering two of their immediate neighbors lost their homes.
Photos are courtesy of my mom and dad.
PS - Would you believe that I am still sick?! Please tell me that the coughing will end soon and I will once again feel alive, cuz right now I feel like Picher Oklahoma.
Oh my word. We just don't experience weather like this in the UK so I have
no concept of how scary and devastating something like this must be. I'm
glad everyone is OK.
Oh my goodness, how awful to be going through that it must have been so
scary for your parents but I'm glad they are OK.
Wow, that was close. Glad to hear everyone was ok. Yesterday, while we
were in the middle of a day long pouring rain storm with very high winds,
which took out the electric, a friend and I were discussing how lucky we
are with NJ weather. We just don't get tornados, hurricanes, or
earthquakes. The worst we get is a nor'easter and we are thankful.
OMGees! I'm glad they are okay! We got lucky also. Very! They say that we
got more storms coming this week, but I don’t know if these are going to be
super cells like the last or not. All the surrounding counties have been
hit, but we have been okay.
Thank goodness they're okay!
I'm such a BIG sissy when it comes to storms!!! I can't stand them!!! I'm
so glad to hear your mom and dad are okay! =)
Geez, that could happen to any of us. My car with two kids and me in it
just missed getting squashed by a tree a few years ago. It was bright and
sunny about a mile down the road.
I'm so glad your parents are okay. It's been an especially harsh tornado
year down here.
That's incredible and I'm so glad your parents are alright. I always think
it would be so cool to be a storm chaser but I always have to remember the
thing I want to chase so badly is actually destroying lives and there is
certainly nothing cool about that.
OMG, I'm so glad your parents are alright. As for you young lady, you will
get better, I promise. This round of colds, etc. has been particularly
harsh and long lasting. I'm going on three weeks, but mine was mild
compared to you.
I'm so glad your parents are okay and didn't have much damage. That was
such a terrible storm system. I hope you get to feeling soon too. So
sorry you are still sick.
Yikes! Scary stuff! Glad your mom and dad didn't get any damage and hope
nobody was hurt. I'll take our Florida hurricanes any day -- at least we
have advanced warning!
I’m sorry you’re still sick but grateful that your Mom & Dad are okay after
the recent tornado. My siste & her husband are traveling in their RV
through tornado alley and whenever I hear news about ‘weather’ in the area
I give them a call. So far all’s well (though they did have one ‘close
call’ a week or so ago). I know lots of folks wonder how we folks in
California deal with earthquakes, but methinks tornados are lots scarier.
Hope you feel better soon.
Hugs and blessings,
Wow, I'm glad they're okay!
makes me feel slightly guilty for wanting to Storm Chase.
Gosh that is really scary the damage that can be caused! Glad your parents
are okay.
Glad your parents are okay. such a tragedy, seems the world is falling
apart all of a sudden.
Get yourself to the doctor if the cough does not get better, a lot of
people are ending up with pneumonia this year and not realizing it.
I'm glad your mom and dad weathered the storm..That "GET IN THE BASEMENT
NOW" feeling makes my stomach drop. I've only done that ONCE.. We just had
straight line winds.. being in the city we usually don't have more than
tree damage..and due to all the rain we've had big trees are just dropping
like flys.
At least they had a basement. I lived in OKC for several years - in a
house with a slab for a foundation. Nowhere to run. I thought I had a
great hiding place, but as I watched the weather from the closet, I
realized I was watching past a very large brick fireplace. Can you say
"deadly missle"? Even now, years later, the first thing I decide when I
move into a place is where I'd go if a tornado warning was issued.
I have a friend who lives in Missouri and in that area called tornado alley
there. Everyone around her got hit - and she is 63 and gathers infos about
tornados. She said this one was too close for comfort. But she's not
moving.
Holy crapola! I do NOT miss the tornado watches and warnings, living here
in Colorado. However, we are due more snow tonight! I remember many storm
warning growing up in Ohio. Always made the pit of my stomach ache and
kept my eyes fixed on the skies. Storms at night are the very worst!!
I am so glad to hear that your parents are ok, Lisa! Honestly, I would be
scared stiff to live there. It was bad enough when I lived in Ohio.
Tornadoes, Hurricanes, Earthquakes...scary stuff!! Hope you feel better
soon!!
I've been away so I hope you are feeling well by now. Can you believe that
after the tornado we had last week, we barely missed the one that crossed
I95 in Georgia on our way to FL. Ackkk! So glad you family fared well.
I'm glad your parents are okay. My Aunt and Uncle live in that area, and
while they didn't have any damage, the last time we talked to them, they
thought the man they were buying their new house from was killed in the
storm.
I am glad your parents are okay. I hope you are feeling better.
