Badlands National Park - South Dakota

posted Friday, 6 June 2008

Our first stop in South Dakota (other than the cute little birds you saw a couple of days ago, which were found in rest areas along I-90) was the Badlands National Park. Sidetracked - Do you know how desolate South Dakota looks for the most part?! Wow! Dennis and I went through this area 6 years ago on our first vacation together. That year we covered 14 states in 10 days and a whole slew of National Parks. We spent our honeymoon in National Parks so really, how appropriate that we spent our 5th wedding anniversary in. . . you got it, National Parks. The only difference this time was that we had our youngest child with us. Haden had never been to any of the places we traveled and I think he had a great time!

Haden helped me discover a lot of flowers and cacti along the way. I love finding cactus. And as you can see, even though it appears pretty desolate there were plenty of living things.

It’s hard to tell but this whole area was full of crevices and there were signs warning of rattlesnakes but we didn’t see any (much to Haden‘s disappointment).

And believe me, he looked. There are several “canyons” between us.

It’s really pretty amazing all the different layers of color.

Tons of prairie dogs.

t27

And goats (That‘s a mama and two babies up there). Some of which had on radio collars, I guess so they can keep track of the herds. There were plenty of antelope too but they were not as cooperative.

t28

Seems they can rest anywhere.

I love South Dakota. Every time we're thru there I'm reminder of why I love to dabble in art, a little of this, a little of that. The air is electric, reminds me of New Mexico, and I love Mt. Rushmore.

Oh, how beautiful!!!! I love those spare landscapes - and the life you find in them are so surprising. I miss the west (but my skin doesn't)!

P.S. Thanks for the words of encouragement. Now I just have to hang on until the 19th. Feeling pretty bad today, but your pictures helped me feel better!

Wow! You are just oozing with talent! I wish I were half as good a photographer as you are!! Your excursion looks like it was a lot of fun! So many neat things to see!!!

I had to chuckle at the cute prairie dog! My brother (now 30 yrs old) used to call them "fairy dogs" when he was a kid! I never knew what he was trying to tell us, as I always envisioned a dog dressed up like a fairy. The guy had a vivid imagination growing up, so one never knew! LOL!

Beautiful country we live in! Someday I hope to get out west. I have been up and down the east coast but not any farther west than Arkansas. I'm really glad you didn't run across the snakes!

Lisa, these are just gorgeous. I love the delicate beauties you captured even in the midst of what looks like rock and sand.

I live in the eastern part of South Dakota, and have yet to make it out to the Black Hills and the Badlands. Your pictures are just gorgeous, and make me think a trip out there in the near future is in order!

I have been through SD and it can be pretty desolate. We have some badlands up here as well and we will be going to them in a couple of days. You got some great photos.

I was amazed at the colors when we travelled through there. We have badlands in Alberta - in fact we are quite famous for them - but these were beautiful. We don't have these colors at all. And fortunately we didn't see any snakes either. We saw some bison off in the distance - but no snakes.

Awesome photos! More cute prairie dogs, and a cute kid (the two legged one). Well, the four legged kids are cute, too. Incredible scenery and I think you got just enough hint of the crevices and arroyos (are they arroyos in SD?) to get the idea across.
